Apple sued in China for not including charger in sales package

Five Chinese students sued Apple for not putting a charger in the iPhone 12 sales package. One of the students said that Apple’s move was only for the company’s benefit.
Previously, tech giant Apple stopped supplying EarPods and chargers to iPhones in 2020, replacing them with a USB-C to Lightning cable in sales packages.

This step is called Apple to reduce carbon emissions and conserve the raw material source.

While the move seems plausible, there are some skeptics who say it’s based on reducing production costs rather than protecting the environment. This cost reduction is thought to be the first step in the transition to 5G, which will make iPhones more expensive.

In addition, as reported by The Verge, eliminating chargers and headphones could force consumers to purchase these accessories separately, which would certainly benefit the company.

A report from the Shanghai Legal Journal goes into detail about the case. In the magazine, it was recorded that one of the students named Xiaofang was disappointed because the iPhone 12 Pro Max bought by him was not given a charger.

Xiaofang said that the cable provided in the sales package is also not compatible with the charger that Apple provided in previous devices. Therefore, consumers should purchase a compatible USB-C charger or MagSafe charger if they don’t already have one.

Then, Xiaofang noted that Apple abandoned wall chargers to introduce the MagSafe charger, which can charge wirelessly. He then blamed Apple’s decision not to provide for-profit chargers instead of using environmental protection as a cover.

Also, Xiaofang and his colleagues took Apple to the Beijing Internet Court, asking Apple to provide a charger. Then pay damages of around US$16 or Rp220,000 for breach of contract and litigation costs, as quoted from Vice.

As noted in a Shanghai Law Journal report, an Apple representative argued that it’s common for some companies to sell phones without a charger.

The case reported by this student is still ongoing and has garnered a lot of support since it went viral on Chinese social media Weibo.

This isn’t the first time Apple has faced a lawsuit against its company not providing a charger. Earlier this year, regulators in Brazil fined Apple $2 million for not providing a charger for the iPhone 12 and accused Apple of misleading customers.
Previously, the iPhone 13 was officially announced worldwide at the Apple Event held by Apple on Wednesday, 15/9. At the event, Apple also announced the price that will be priced for each device in the iPhone 13 series.

Meanwhile, the official price of the iPhone 13 in Indonesia has not been disclosed. It has been confirmed that the price of the iPhone 13 has increased in Indonesia because of additional costs to distributors.
